7 Rule-Based Automations Every Options Seller Should Set Up
Manual option selling is a discipline problem. These seven rule-based automations — entries, rolling, stops and square-offs — execute your plan without emotion.
Short answer: The seven automations that matter most for option sellers are: time-based entry, premium-based entry, rolling, MTM stop-loss, ATM-straddle stop-loss, profit-target exit, and end-of-day square-off. Together they turn a written plan into code that runs whether or not you're watching the screen.
Option selling fails less on strategy and more on discipline — exiting late, rolling too slowly, freezing on a red day. Rules remove the human lag.
1. Time-based entry
Enter at a fixed time (e.g. 9:30 IST after the open settles, or post-event). Removes the "should I enter now?" hesitation and standardises your sample.
2. Premium-based entry
Trigger entry when an option's premium hits a target (e.g. sell the straddle when combined premium ≥ X). Lets the market come to your price instead of chasing.
3. Rolling
As spot drifts, automatically roll the tested side to a new strike to stay delta-balanced. Manual rolling is always a step behind; automated rolling keeps the structure intact. See delta-neutral trading.
4. MTM stop-loss
Close the position when mark-to-market loss hits your rupee limit. The single most important rule for a naked seller. Details: MTM stop-loss & auto square-off.
5. ATM-straddle stop-loss
Exit when the ATM straddle value expands by a set percentage — a volatility-aware stop that reacts to the move, not just your P&L.
6. Profit-target exit
Book profit at a target (e.g. 50–70% of max premium). Most of a seller's edge is captured well before expiry; greed gives it back.
7. End-of-day square-off
Auto-close (or auto-hedge) intraday positions before close so you never carry unintended overnight risk.
Why rules beat willpower
| Manual | Rule-based | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction speed | Human lag | Instant |
| Emotion | Fear/greed | None |
| Consistency | Varies by day | Identical every time |
| Overnight risk | Easy to forget | Auto square-off |
